Some years ago a student of mine showed up with a Tokai LP circa 87/88 that he paid around 1k for. For another example, Japanese built Fenders from that period are also highly sought after guitars that go for much more than their original retail value among collectors for this very reason. in terms of quality, and in many cases they succeeded. The Tokai LP’s of that epoch are believed by many to be better quality than Gibson’s offerings, and if fact, Gibson sued Tokai in the late 80s because Tokais guitars were so “spot on.” The idea behind Tokai and a lot of other Japanese manufacturers was to out produce the U.S. Tokais of that era are highly coveted guitars among players and collectors because at that time the Japanese manufacture was making arguably better guitars than Gibson and Fender.
